Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018: Punjab Defeat Karnataka In Super Over Thriller

Punjab held their nerves in the super over of the Super League and defeated a strong Karnataka in the first game to kick off the second phase of the tournament with a win.

After bowling first, Punjab had a great start and dismissed an in-form Mayank Agarwal on just six. It was Manpreet Singh Gony who once again shone for the side by dismissing the batsmen on the first delivery of the second over. Karnataka lost two more quick wickets in the form of Krishnappa Gowtham and Karun Nair. They were three down for just 35 in five overs.

R Samarth and CM Gautam pulled the team out difficulty by sharing 55 runs and taking the team close to a total of 100. The wicket of Samarth was followed with three more quick wickets, and Karnataka were left in all sorts of troubles when they were seven down on 111.

Anirudha Joshi did the job for his side in the later overs and scored 40* runs off just 19 to help his side post a defendable total of 158.

Punjab too had a poor start as Manan Vohra was dismissed when Punjab were on 15. Harbhajan Singh promoted himself to number three, and along with Mandeep Singh, he took the team to a score of 82. Harbhajan played a brilliant innings of 33 off just 19.

Punjab were on track to win the game, but Karnataka made a strong comeback, and apart from taking wickets, they were also able to slow down the flow of runs. Yuvraj Singh played slow innings of 29 off 25.

At the end 40 overs, the score of both the teams was equal.

The match was down to super over where Mandeep Singh scored ten off four while Yuvraj scored five off 2. Punjab asked Karnataka to chase down 16 in six deliveries.

Last over specialists, Siddharth Kaul, once again delivered glory by saving the game for his team by giving 11 runs and also taking one wicket.

Punjab will now face Mumbai in their next game while Karnataka will face Rajasthan in their second contest of the Super League.
