The Hundred 2023: Mitchell Starc Pulls Out Of The Men's Draft With Less Than 24 Hours Remaining

Mitchell Starc has decided to withdraw his name from the long-list for the tournament draft for this year’s Men’s Hundred, which is set to take place on Thursday. Despite being one of the few Australian players to express interest in participating in the tournament. His notable performance in Sunday’s second match, where he took five wickets, contributed to Australia’s series victory.

The Men’s Hundred is scheduled to begin one day after the fifth Ashes Test concludes. Mitchell Starc had joined the draft for this year’s Men’s Hundred last month, and his participation would have been a lucrative opportunity for one of the five overseas player slots available, which carry a price tag of £125,000 each.

n the previous year’s draft, Superchargers had planned to select Starc as a top pick, but he withdrew his name from consideration just before the registration deadline. Several high-profile overseas players, including Jhye Richardson of Australia and South Africa’s Anrich Nortje, Aiden Markram, and Tristan Stubbs, have opted out of both the men’s and women’s drafts for the Hundred.

The Hundred: Mitchell Starc, Anrich Nortje Amongst Big Names As Stars Pull Out Before Draft

While there has been no news around the reasons for Mitchell Starc pulling out of The Men’s Hundred competition, Anrich Nortje on the other hand was recently announced as a marquee pick for Washington (DC) Freedom in the first-ever season of Major League Cricket in the USA, which will run from July 13 to 30, just two days before the start of the Hundred on August 1.

Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, and Tayla Vlaeminck are among the notable absentees from the women’s draft, joining a growing number of Australian women’s players who have secured lucrative deals in the inaugural Women’s Premier League in India. Sutherland was previously retained by Welsh Fire.

While a lot of big names have pulled out of the tournament, there have been some who have been added into the draft pool in the past few days. Laurie Evans, who was named the Player of the Match in the 2022 Big Bash Final, has been added to the draft after his provisional ban for testing positive for a banned substance was lifted. In addition to Evans, the draft has also seen notable additions such as Ben Foakes, the Test wicketkeeper for England, and Tamim Iqbal from Bangladesh.
