Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the best T20 leagues in the cricket world. After its inauguration in 2008, this cash-rich tournament has successfully entertained the world cricket in every year. While the IPL 2020 is currently running in the UAE, it is the 13th edition of this tournament.
Six or over-boundary is one of the very important part in the T20 cricket. While the T20 cricket or IPL is a shorter format, sixes become crucial factor in this kind of game as it helps to move the scoreboard faster.
Every year in the IPL, we see the raining of sixes. At the end of each IPL season, the leader in the list of most sixes wins the Maximum Sixes Award.
Here we are talking about the total number of sixes hit in every IPL season.
IPL 2008 – 620 sixes
The Indian Premier League started in 2008 with eight teams and the tournament achieved huge success from its first edition. At the end of that exciting tournament, Rajasthan Royals created history by becoming the first IPL trophy winner.
In the inaugural IPL season (IPL 2018), we experienced a total of 620 sixes from the batsmen in 59 matches. 96 different batsmen hit at least one six in that IPL season while Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya (Mumbai Indians) won the Maximum Sixes Award after finishing the tournament with the 31 sixes (14 matches).
IPL 2009 – 457 sixes
Due to the Indian general elections, the IPL 2009 was completely shifted to South Africa. All the eight teams of the first edition participated in the IPL 2009. At the end of the second IPL season, Deccan Chargers won the trophy.
At the end of the 59 matches in that IPL edition, the total number of sixes in that tournament was 457. A total of 74 different batsmen hit sixes in that tournament. The IPL 2009 winning captain, Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist (Deccan Chargers) won the Maximum Sixes Award, who finished that season with 29 sixes.
IPL 2010 – 583 sixes
India successfully hosted the third IPL season in 2010 edition. While all the same eight teams participated in this tournament, a third-place playoff was added in that tournament that raised one game in that edition as we experienced a total of 60 matches in that season. Chennai Super Kings won their first IPL trophy in that edition.
At the end of the IPL 2010, the total number of sixes in that edition was 583. A total of 89 different batsmen managed to hit at least one six in that edition. Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa, who served for Royal Challengers Bangalore in that edition, won the Maximum Sixes Award after hitting 27 sixes in that IPL season.
IPL 2011 – 638 sixes
In less than a week of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 final, India hosted the opening match of the IPL 2011. In that fourth IPL season, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India joined along with the existing eight teams as the 10-team IPL 2011 had the total number of matches of 74. The present IPL playoff system started from this season, where Chennai Super Kings retained their IPL trophy.
While a total of 97 different batsmen hit at least one six in the IPL 2011, the total number of sixes in that tournament was 638. After hitting 44 sixes in that IPL edition, Caribbean star Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bangalore) won the Maximum Sixes Award.
IPL 2012 – 726 sixes
IPL 2012 was the fifth season of the Indian Premier League. Kochi Tuskers Kerala were removed from the tournament as we experienced 76 matches in total in the nine-team IPL 2012. At the end of the fifth IPL season, Kolkata Knight Riders won their maiden IPL trophy.
While the total sixes in the IPL 2012 was 726, the number of batsmen who hit at least one six in that edition was 100. West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle once again won the Maximum Sixes Award in that IPL edition as the left-handed batsman smashed 59 sixes for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
IPL 2013 – 674 sixes
Once again nine teams participated in the IPL 2013 as a total of 76 matches were played in that IPL season, including the playoffs. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad joined as a new side who replaced Deccan Chargers. Mumbai Indians won their maiden IPL trophy in that edition.
A total of 95 batsmen hit at least one over-boundary in the IPL 2013 as the total number of sixes in that edition was 674. Royal Challenger Bangalore star Chris Gayle continued his dominance over the bowlers as he won the Maximum Sixes Award for the third time in a row after smashing 51 sixes in that edition.
IPL 2014 – 714 sixes
Due to the Indian general elections, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosted the first 20 matches of the IPL 2014. Then India hosted all the remaining 40 matches of the tournament. Eight teams participated in that tournament as Pune Warriors India was removed from the tournament. Kolkata Knight Riders won their second IPL trophy in that edition.
In that IPL season, a total of 714 sixes were hit by the 85 batsmen. Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell (Kings XI Punjab) smashed 36 sixes in that IPL edition and finally won the Maximum Sixes Award of that season.
IPL 2015 – 692 sixes
A total of eight teams participated in the IPL 2015 where a total of 60 matches were played in that tournament. Mumbai Indians won their second IPL trophy in that season.
The total number of sixes in the IPL 2015 was 692. A total of 89 batsmen hit at least one six in that IPL season. Caribbean star Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bangalore) again won the Maximum Sixes Award after hitting 38 sixes in that season.
IPL 2016 – 638 sixes
While IPL 2016 followed the exact same pattern like the previous two seasons, two new teams were added as the replacement of suspended teams Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Those two new teams were Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants. Sunrisers Hyderabad won their maiden IPL trophy in that season.
In the IPL 2016, the total number of sixes reached to 638. A total of 93 batsmen hit at least one six in that IPL season. Indian cricketer Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore) won the Maximum Sixes Award in the IPL 2016 for hitting 38 sixes.
IPL 2017 – 705 sixes
IPL 2017 followed the same teams and same format of the IPL 2016. However, before the beginning of that tournament, Rising Pune Supergiants renamed as Rising Pune Supergiant (erasing the ‘s’ at the end). At the end of that IPL season, Mumbai Indians became the first team to win three IPL trophies.
A total of 93 batsmen hit 705 over boundaries in the IPL 2017. Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell (Kings XI Punjab) won his second Maximum Sixes Award as the right-handed batsman hit 26 sixes in that edition (Sunrisers Hyderabad cricketer David Warner also hit 26 sixes in the IPL 2017).
IPL 2018 – 872 sixes
After completing their suspension periods, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals both returned to the IPL 2018, which also means that Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant ended their IPL journey. The eight-team tournament followed the same format with the same number of matches (60 matches). Chennai Super Kings won their third IPL trophy at the end of this IPL season.
The total number of sixes in the IPL 2018 was 872, while the total number of six hitters was 93. Indian youngster Rishabh Pant (Delhi Daredevils) won the Maximum Sixes Award for hitting 37 sixes in that IPL season.
IPL 2019 – 784 sixes
Though it was the time for Indian general election, India successfully hosted the entire IPL 2019. Before the beginning of this tournament, Delhi Daredevils renamed as Delhi Capitals. Apart from that, there was no change in the IPL tournament. At the end of this tournament, Mumbai Indians created history by becoming the first team to win four IPL trophies.
A total of 784 sixes were hit in 60 matches during the IPL 2019. A total of 91 batsmen hit at least one six in that IPL season. Caribbean cricketer Andre Russell, who served for Kolkata Knight Riders, won the Maximum Sixes Award after hitting 52 sixes in that season.
IPL 2020 – 734 sixes
A total of 78 different batsmen hit a total of 734 sixes in the entire IPL 2020. This time the Indian youngster Ishan Kishan, who served for the champions Mumbai Indians, won the Maximum Sixes Award for hitting 30 sixes in that season.
