As lunch was taken during the fourth day of the Durban Test match, many thought the game wouldn’t last until tea, let alone the fifth day. Chasing a target of 417, it was all about dogged survival through the five days for the hosts.

However, it quickly escalated for South Africa, with them tottering at 49-4. The cream of the Proteas batting featuring Dean Elgar, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, and Faf du Plessis was back in the pavilion before the lunch interval.

That said, it was the young brigade of the men in gold and green, who stood up to the occasion. The likes of Aiden Markram, Theunis de Bruyn and Quinton de Kock made life difficult for the Aussies.

The young trio displayed immense character to survive the fourth day of the Test match as well as give South Africans an outside chance out of nowhere.

Markram perhaps played the knock of the season under pressure, in a fourth innings run-chase. He received a standing ovation when dismissed on the stroke of stumps on Day 4.

Aiden put to rest all his critics, with his mammoth 143 off 218 balls, containing 19 glorious boundaries. Markram’s knock came in the backdrop of criticism earlier for running AB De Villiers out.

He built a magnificent counterattacking partnership with De Bruyn and first, which steadied the ship for South Africa. Shortly after de Bruyn dismissal, De Kock and Markram stitched a mammoth partnership of 147 runs.

With both De Kock and Markram at the crease, the home team looked at ease and a possible run chase was on. But, it all changed after Aiden Markram’s dismissal. Philander too departed soon as bad lights started to take effect for the fourth time in a row.

It was South Africa’s nemesis from the first inning, Mitchell Starc, who yet again cleaned up the rest of the tail. Rabada and Maharaj shortly followed Philander.

At the end of the fourth day, South Africa ended the day with one wicket remaining and 293 runs on the board, marginally avoiding a loss on Day 4.
