AB de Villiers on Friday (November 19) announced his retirement from all forms of cricket including the Indian Premier League and franchise cricket as well. De Villiers shared a post on his social media accounts like Twitter and Facebook revealing his decision to part ways from playing cricket on the field. Fans were surprised to know about AB de Villier’s decision, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore team in IPL 2021 last month.

De Villiers had already retired from international cricket in 2018. However, the 37-year-old was quite active in franchise cricket leagues. In IPL, he was part of Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise and has been a core player for the team since the 2011 edition. He is a hard-hitting batsman who entertained fans with his lofted shots all over the ground and earned the nickname of Mr. 360.

In his retirement post on social media, the former South Africa captain said that he played the game with pure enjoyment and unbridled enthusiasm. He also thanked teammates, opponents, and staff members who were part of his cricket journey.

“Ever since the back yard matches with my older brothers, I have played the game with pure enjoyment and unbridled enthusiasm. Now, at the age of 37, that flame no longer burns so brightly. That’s the reality I must accept – and, even if it may seem sudden, that is why I am making this announcement today”.

“I’ve had my time. I would like to thank every teammate, every opponent, every coach, every physio and every staff member who has travelled the same path, and I am humbled by the support I have received in South Africa, in India, wherever I have played”, some lines form his post read.

AB de Villiers played for South Africa from 2004 to 2018, playing 114 Tests, 228 ODIs, and 78 T20Is for the national side. He was a wicket-keeper batsman. After retiring from international cricket in 2018, Villiers continued to play franchise cricket tournaments like IPL, Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League, and Bangladesh Premier League.
