Hosts Australia continued asserting their dominance in the 2021-22 Ashes series as they won the second Test at the Adelaide Oval by a whopping 275 runs to take a 2-0 lead.

Jhye Richardson did the star turn with the ball in the fourth innings as he picked up his maiden five-wicket haul. It included the crucial wicket of Jos Buttler, who was defiant in a great rearguard act. Buttler had played out nearly 35 overs before being dismissed hit-wicket.

The Test was set up for the Aussies in the first innings when they piled up 473/9 on the board. Man of the Match, Marnus Labuschagne, scored a century and he was accompanied by two 90s from David Warner and stand-in captain, Steve Smith. Some lower-order contributions also helped in the end.

As has been the case for England for a while, Joe Root batted well alongside Dawid Malan in England’s reply. Once they fell, the innings fell apart and they surrendered a 237-run lead. Australia decided to pile on the misery and brought the English bowlers out for another stint instead of following on.

Another fifty for Labuschagne along with Travis Head’s brisk knock ensured the hosts had plenty on the board before declaring. Chasing 468 runs was always improbable barring another Root miracle but the English skipper fell in the final moments on Day 4.

It was a mere formality for the Aussies on Day 5 as they needed just six wickets. Although Buttler combined with Chris Woakes and Ollie Robinson tried to defy their opponents a win, Australia eventually seeped through via Richardson’s five-for.
