Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) was subjected to a humiliating defeat by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 31st match of the IPL 2021. Virat Kohli’s 200th match for the franchise turned out to be a forgettable experience as KKR crushed RCB by 9 wickets.

Nothing went right for Kohli’s men apart from winning the toss. The skipper himself, who announced that he will be stepping down from India T20I and RCB captaincy duties soon, was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna in the second over of the innings.

Debutante Srikar Bharat showed glimpses of his talent but was found wanting against the pacy deliveries. Mr.360, AB de Villiers, was sent back on his very first delivery from an inspired Andre Russell. The side slowly crawled its way past the 90-run mark and ended up being bowled out for 92.

There were no demons in the pitch. The KKR bowlers bowled brilliantly as a unit and dominated the batsmen on a greenish wicket. Russell and Varun Chakravarthy picked up three wickets each, while Kiwi Lockie Ferguson snared a couple of wickets.

The chase was a mere formality. The Purple Brigade openers, Shubman Gill and debutant Venkatesh Iyer attacked right from the beginning and put the Bangalore side under pressure. They targeted Kyle Jamieson in particular, stepping down the track very often, trying to disrupt the Kiwi’s line and length.

Gill looked his usual attacking self, a refreshing change from the patchy first leg he endured back in April this year. His partner, Iyer, also had a few moments of his own to cherish. The duo put up an 81-run stand which helped the Kolkata side reach closer, before going past the line.

Twitter was disappointed with the poor outing of Kohli and co. but expected them to bounce back in the coming matches. The win took Eoin Morgan’s side over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the table into sixth place, while the RCB remain in their third spot.
