Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered their first win of the second leg and the sixth win overall in the IPL 2021 season. They defeated arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 31st match of the season on September 19, Sunday.

CSK’s innings was revived by a brilliant innings from Ruturaj Gaikwad. He took his time at the crease after the Yellow Brigade found themselves wanting against the Kiwi duo of Trent Boult and Adam Milne.

They were four down by the 6th over with Ambati Rayudu also having to head back due to an elbow injury. Unfazed, Gaikwad teamed up with Ravindra Jadeja and pushed the innings forward. The momentum-changing over came in the 12th over bowled by Krunal Pandya, where 18 runs were collected.

After that, there was no turning back as Gaikwad piled on the runs at will. Dwayne Bravo came in at the fall of Jadeja’s wicket and gave another massive boost with a great cameo. Eventually, they reached 156/6 in their allotted 20 overs which proved to be a few too many runs in the end.

Similar to CSK, MI was also off to a poor start. However, nobody played the role of the anchor, as Gaikwad did. While Quinton de Kock looked in fine touch, he was done in by Deepak Chahar, who once again proved how good he is in the powerplay.

Suryakumar Yadav played an uncharacteristic knock before being sent back by Shardul Thakur. Out-of-form Ishan Kishan also failed to make an impact and when skipper Kieron Pollard fell after making 15, things looked bleak for MI.

Saurabh Tiwary, who was added to the playing XI in place of Hardik Pandya, tried to fight it out from one end but ran out of partners. Eventually, MI lost the match by 20 runs, keeping them in fourth place while CSK moved to the top of the table over Delhi Capitals by virtue of their better run rate.
