In very upsetting news for Rajasthan Royals (RR) fans, their premier all-rounder Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the ongoing IPL 2021 tournament. This comes after the franchise confirmed that the England player had broken his finger in RR’s IPL 2021 opening match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Ben Stokes had a quiet match which was one of the highest-scoring ones. Punjab Kings batted first after RR’s new captain Sanju Samson won the toss and chose to bowl. KL Rahul slammed 91 with five sixes and 7 fours, while Chris Gayle contributed 40 runs. But the knock of PBKS innings came from Deepak Hooda who obliterated RR bowlers with 28-ball 64 runs which included 6 sixes and 4 fours, as PBKS slammed 221/6 in 20 overs.

In reply, RR managed 217/7 which was all due to captain charisma Sanju Samson’s 119 with 12 fours and 7 sixes. Had he gotten more support from some other batsmen who had made a fifty, he might have gone on to win the match for the Royals. Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag both made 25 and Jos Buttler made 23 runs.

Ben Stokes didn’t do much bowling one over for 12 runs and made a three-ball duck, getting out caught and bowled by Mohammed Shami. In the field, he dropped a sitter of a catch but later made up for it with a sliding effort to remove Chris Gayle.

Rajasthan Royals confirmed that Stokes suffered a broken finger in his left hand during this catch as he ran in from long-on and dived forward to complete the dismissal of the West Indian batsman. He had immediately felt discomfort in his left hand, grimacing as he got up to celebrate with his teammates.

Rajasthan also said that Stokes will remain in India for a week more and will get an X-Ray in India on Thursday to determine how much damage has been done. The Royals and ECB are in dialogue to manage his injury and ECB will take over the recovery planning after the X-ray reveals the damage.

The Twitterverse was in shock as the news broke out of Ben Stokes’s injury and the social media site was flooded with messages for the England all-rounder.
