Glenn Maxwell made his much-awaited debut for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the first match of the IPL 2021 against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Glenn Maxwell was eager to prove his value after a terrible IPL 2020 season with Punjab Kings (PBKS) where he managed just 108 runs without a six. He was released by the PBKS franchise, but the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) entered into a bidding war with CSK in the IPL 2021 auction and bought him for Rs 14.25 crores.
Glenn Maxwell Slams Rahul Chahar For A Six Hitting An Audacious Switch Hit
Mumbai Indians were asked to bat first after RCB captain Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to bowl. Harshal Patel’s 5/27 kept the MI team to just 159/9. Chris Lynn was the top scorer for the blue army with 49 runs including 3 sixes. Suryakumar Yadav made 31 runs and Ishan Kishan fell for 28 runs.
Debutant Kyle Jamieson also impressed with figures of 1/27 in 4 overs. MI had looked marching towards the total of 180 plus at 94/2 in 11 overs, but Harshal Patel and other bowlers pulled the innings back for RCB. Harshal Patel became the first-ever bowler to take five wickets in an innings against Mumbai Indians in IPL history.
Meanwhile, RCB opened their run chase with Virat Kohli and Washington Sundar opening the innings. However, Sundar struggled for his 10 runs in 16 balls and was dismissed by Krunal Pandya, caught by Chris Lynn. Rajat Patidar on his IPL debut came next and hit a wonderful boundary, before being clean bowled by Trent Boult for 8 runs in 8 balls.
This wicket brought out Glenn Maxwell to the crease at no.4, ahead of AB de Villiers, much to the surprise of many. But Maxwell was back to doing what he does back by reverse swatting Rahul Chahar for a four for his first boundary in the match. He hit him for another boundary in the same over.
However, for someone who didn’t hit a single six in the previous IPL 2020 edition, Maxwell slammed a huge 108 meter hit off Krunal Pandya to open his account in the sixes category for the IPL 2021 season.
But his most audacious shot came on the first ball of the 12th over, as he switch-hit Rahul Chahar for a six trying to target the shorter side of the ground, despite Chahar bowling it outside the off stump, but Maxwell managed to power it over the boundary. It was just one of the best shots coming off the bat of Glenn Maxwell, showing his ominous form right at the start of the tournament.
