Australia captain Tim Paine will remember the third Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground for a long, long time and not because of the reasons he would have wanted. On a fifth day pitch, the wicketkeeper could not guide his team to a win against a team that has been plagued by injuries and was reeling at 102 for 3 inside few minutes after the start of play on day five.

With Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane back in the hut, Australia were in pole position to win. But their captain Tim Paine was focusing more on the chatting rather than the cricket and it eventually cost them a win. And his miseries on the field were compounded by Ravichandran Ashwin who gave the Australian a fitting reply after the latter tried to unsettle the India spinner.

The incident took place when Ravichandran Ashwin was up against Nathan Lyon. Both Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari were at the crease for more than three hours at that stage as they batted out of their skin to ensure India save the third Test. And with time running out to win the game, Tim Paine decided to do the talking.

The Australia skipper told the India ace he could not wait for him to play at the Gabba. Earlier in the day, Ashwin had coped some painful blows on his body while facing some short deliveries from the Australia pacer. Ashwin, nonetheless, came up with a fitting reply for Tim Paine, telling him: “Can’t wait for you to come to India. It’ll be your last series.”

The reply from Ashwin must have hurt the outspoken Australian as he replied: “At least my teammates like me, di*khead”

Here is a clip of the conversation:

Not only that, Tim Paine also resorted to racism by speaking in Indian accent after taking a dig at Ashwin switching IPL teams last year.

Things then got from bad to worse for Paine as he dropped Hanuma Vihari shortly after his unpleasant conversation with Ashwin. Earlier in the day, he had also dropped Rishabh Pant twice before the India wicketkeeper went on to play a stunning knock of 97.
