Indian batter Virat Kohli breached the 8000-run mark in his Test career during the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium in Mohali on Friday.

He scored a fluent knock filled with typical strokeplay. However, he couldn’t convert his start once again as he fell to a pearler from Lasith Embuldeniya. Nevertheless, he became just the sixth Indian batter in the process to score 8000 runs or more.

Watching from the stands was Kohli’s wife and Bollywood actress, Anushka Sharma. Upon reaching the 8k mark, the crowd was seen applauding the achievement and Anushka also celebrated the feat of her husband.

Watch the moment here:

Kohli’s innings in his 100th Test got off to a nervy start. On his very second ball, he attempted a wristy flick which caught the outside edge and floated over the short cover fielder. Once the pacers came on, he became a lot more comfortable and started accumulating the runs.

Alongside Hanuma Vihari, he rebuilt the innings after India lost both the openers in a matter of overs. They stitched a 90-run partnership for the third wicket before a special delivery from the left-arm spinner, Embuldeniya, sent Kohli back.

He received a standing ovation from the crowd as he walked back. Kohli’s 71st-century drought continues, however, but he will have another go in the second innings of the Mohali Test.
