Team India’s stand-in captain KL Rahul had an animated discussion with the South African players after being adjudged out by the third umpire in another close call on Day 2 of the Johannesburg Test.

Playing in India’s second innings, Rahul nicked a delivery from Marco Jansen which was caught by Aiden Markram. He proceeded to claim the catch and the on-field umpires took the help of the TV umpire with the soft signal as ‘Out’.

Unless there was conclusive evidence, the third umpire cannot overturn the decision. The 2D cameras available showed that the ball might have carried from one angle while another showed that it might have bounced just in front.

Since it was inconclusive, Rahul was asked to walk back. He had an argument with the players on the field before walking off shaking his head furiously.

Earlier, there was a similar incident when Rishabh Pant claimed a catch of Rassie van der Dussen just before Lunch. Unlike Rahul, the South African batter walked off without checking if the ball had carried.

Replays showed exactly the same thing that happened with Markram – carrying from the side angle while bouncing from the front angle. Controversy brewed as expected but the third umpire checked the replays during Lunch break and stated there was no reasonable evidence to overturn the decision.

Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur took his first five-wicket haul and also ended up becoming the Indian bowler with the best figures in an innings in South Africa (7/61). South Africa was bowled out for 229 having taken a lead of 27.
