New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson provided the first breakthrough immediately after Lunch on Day 1 as he got one to go through the set Shubman Gill’s stumps in the first Test on Thursday.
Jamieson was the most threatening Kiwi bowler in the first session and he deservedly got the wicket of Mayank Agarwal. Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara managed to see out of the rest of the session but the break caused a lapse in Gill’s concentration.
In the very first over after Lunch, Jamieson bowled one in the slot and got it to move in just a little bit. Gill didn’t account for the movement and the ball took the inside edge before crashing into the middle and off stump.
The tall pacer has been India’s nemesis ever since the start of the World Test Championship. In the WTC Final held in June, he took a fifer and completely dismantled the Indian batting lineup. Critics were keen on seeing his performance outside swinging conditions and Jamieson hasn’t disappointed one bit so far.
Unfortunately for Gill, his hard-working fifty came to an end in a manner that has become quite synonymous with him. In 14 dismissals so far, Gill has been LBW or bowled six times which indicates a problem with his defence. Nevertheless, he is still starting out in Tests and has time to fix his weaknesses.
