Virat Kohli made his much-awaited return to the Indian team during the first T20I against Australia on Sunday. The India skipper had left the team in New Zealand after guiding it to an unassailable 3-0 lead to spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of international cricket. Consequently, he missed the following two ODIs and the subsequent three-match T20I series.

Prior to that, he had a gruelling stay in the southern hemisphere. Kohli was the only Indian player to play in all the games since India landed in Australia before he was granted rest by the team-management. Well, it was a game to forget for Kohli as Australia beat India by 3 wickets to take an unassailable lead in the two-match series.

Asked to bat first, India could only manage 126 for 7 in the allotted 50 overs. KL Rahul top-scored for the hosts, scoring 50 on his comeback. Kohli, on the other hand, got the start but failed to capitalise on it. He scored 24 before being sent back by Adam Zampa.

In reply, Australia nearly made heavy weather of the modest target but eventually crossed the line. Needing 14 runs off the last over, Jhye Richardson and Pat Cummins hit a four each off Umesh Yadav to take the visitors over the line.

But while the result was in the team’s favour, Kohli managed to add yet another feather to his already illustrious cap. The 30-year old became the first ever batsman to amass 500 T20I runs against a single opposition. Kohli now has 512 runs against Australia in T20Is at a stunning average of 56.88 with the help of five fifties.
