Run Machine Virat Kohli Achieves Another Milestone As India Skipper

Team India dominated the proceedings of day one of the historic day-night Test against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Skipper Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara steadied the ship after losing the openers early to take the lead after knocking out the visitors for 106 runs after they opted to bat first in the historic occasion banking on Ishant Sharma’s five-wicket haul.

Batsman after batsman have shown signs of not picking the ball in the twilight conditions. The final wicket too falls with Rohit Sharma, at second slip, indicating that he couldn’t spot the ball. But the catch is taken off the rebound and Bangladesh were all out for 106 within the first two sessions. The Indian fast bowlers wreaked havoc with the pink ball as the visitors were all in tatters.

Mohamed Shami was precise with his bouncers as two of Bangladeshi batsmen had to retire hurt forcing the management to opt for concussion substitutes. Mehidy Hasan and Taijul Islam came as concussion substitutes; however, Mehidy will not be allowed to bowl throughout the Kolkata Test as per ICC guidelines which allows only allows like-to-like replacement as concussion replacement.

Meanwhile, India didn’t get a good start as Al-Amin Hossain removed Mayank Agarwal. Another opener Rohit Sharma looked in the good scheme of things before Ebadat Hossain got the better of him as the infamous salute celebration was on offer for the Eden Gardens crowd. Virat Kohli steadied the ship partnering Cheteshwar Pujara as they 70+ runs for the third wicket as India took a crucial lead.

In the process, Virat Kohli completed his 5000 Test runs as India skipper. He became the first Indian captain to achieve the feat and also the sixth in the world. South Africa’s Graeme Smith leads the chart with 8659 runs followed by Allan Border (6623), Ricky Ponting (6542), Clive Lloyd (5233), and Stephen Fleming (5156). MS Dhoni is the second Indian to feature in the list with 3454 runs.

India will hope to extend the lead as much as possible to inflict another innings win in the series. So far, they have registered three consecutive series win with two against South Africa and one against Bangladesh in the first Test in Indore.
