Virender Sehwag could not help but praise Pakistan after they stunned England by 14 runs in a thrilling World Cup clash at Trent Bridge on Monday. Not many had given Pakistan even an outside chance of beating the hosts and the world number one ODI side. However, the world once again witnessed Pakistan’s unpredictable tag as they stunned their fancied opponents to bring their campaign on track.

Buoyed by the win over South Africa in their World Cup-opener, England decided to bowl first. Having beaten Pakistan 4-0 just a few days ago, England were confident of getting the task done again. However, they were in for a huge surprise. Pakistan put behind their shambolic display against West Indies when they were all out for just 105 and posted a mammoth total of 348 for 8. The innings was studded with 29 fours and six sixes.

Veteran batsman Mohammad Hafeez was his side’s top scorer with 84 off 62 balls. Babar Azam and skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed contributed well too, scoring 63 and 55 respectively. In reply, England lost wickets at regular intervals at start. They were reeling at 118 for 4 with Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes back in the pavilion.

However, Joe Root and Jos Buttler brought back England in the game by scoring century each. But both of them fell in quick succession right after reaching three figures. Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes then swung at all the deliveries but were soon caught out in successive balls and England eventually finished on 334 for 9.
