In order to deal with the pacy and bouncy wickets of South Africa, Australia have come up with an unique training method. The team from Down Under will take on the Proteas in a four-Test series and is making sure to prepare earnestly for the tough series.

On Sunday (February 18), Steve Smith & Co. completed an exhaustive fielding session in Benoni. The gruesome training session lasted close to three hours. The session was led by fielding coach Brad Haddin and assistant coach David Saker.

The session comprised numerous drills, replicating different fielding situations but there was one particular method that caught everyone’s attention. The drill featured a white bed sheet held up by a pair of steel poles. The bed sheet was standing above a fielding board. A thrower and a catcher were standing to either side of the sheet.  The idea behind the drill was to prepare the fielders for reflex catches.

Here is the clip showing the drill:

“Basically what it was, we wanted the guys just to react to the ball,” Haddin explained.

“We didn’t want them to get any cues from the thrower, so we needed to put a bed sheet there, so the boys just reacted to what they did.

“Late in the day sometimes when you can be a bit sleepy and you’ve just got to react to what comes, or a slip fielder to a spinner where you lose sight of it.

“Yeah, it wasn’t because ‘Marshy’ (allrounder Mitchell Marsh) wet the bed to dry it! It was all just part of the drill,” he added.

Australia’s tour of South Africa will start with a three-day warm-up game, starting February 22. The first Test will start on March 1.
