The mystery behind the spelling of Axar Patel‘s name has perhaps confused people more than India’s great escape against Bangladesh in the World T20 last year when Hardik Pandya defended 2 off 3 balls. Barring the bowler himself and his close ones, only a few know how his name is spelled. Is it Axar Patel or Akshar Patel?

In fact, even the Wikipedia and ESPNcricinfo contradict on the much talked-about topic. While Wikipedia spells the name as Akshar, the cricket website uses Axar. Well, the left-arm spinner has himself disclosed the mystery behind the name.

In a video interaction with his team-mates Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Twitter, Patel revealed the story that led to the confusion. The three  stars were involved in a lively chat while they were travelling to Bengaluru for the fourth ODI against Australia.

“I was in training camp in Bengaluru for the U-19 World Cup. I had to apply for a passport as I didn’t have one,” Patel said when Rahul asked him to reveal the story behind his name.  My father went to my school for collecting the relieving certificate and my principal wrote ‘Axar’ on it and from there on all of my documents have the same spelling.

Meanwhile, the left-arm spinner has been retained in the squad for the remaining two-games of the ongoing five-match series. He was in the squad for the first three games but an ankle injury saw him getting replaced by Ravindra Jadeja.
