Leg slip is not a very popular fielding position but at the same time it is not very unusual. The captains have been seen placing a fielder at that position for those rare mistimed flick shots. And on Sunday, Australia captain Tim Paine stationed David Warner at leg slip with their spin spearhead Nathan Lyon operating in tandem against New Zealand at the MCG.

But while David Warner and others must have been hoping that the New Zealand batsmen mistime a flick shot at leg slip, they received a big surprise as BJ Watling was dismissed in a bizarre fashion. Instead of a flick, Watling tried to play a drive but only managed to edge the ball. And to everyone’s utter surprise, the ball missed the stumps and flew straight to David Warner at leg slip.

Here is a clip of that wicket:

Australia thrash New Zealand:

As far as the game is concerned, Australia thrashed New Zealand by 247 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Tom Blundell scored a fighting ton but it was not enough as Australia bowled out the Kiwis for 240 to wrap up the series in style. New Zealand were never in contention to win the game after being set a target of 488.

But many were expecting them to come up with a good fight. However, the visitors came up with yet another disappointing effort with the bat.

“They’ve got a fantastic attack with pace and bounce but their accuracy stood apart and they did seem to get more out of that surface,” said New Zealand skipper Williamson.

“All round from our perspective we need to be better in all departments. We do need to be better come Sydney,” he added.
