Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor’s dismissal against Bangladesh in the ongoing second ODI in Harare hogged the limelight on social media. Brendan Taylor, given out by the third umpire after the on-field one sent it upstairs, resurfaced the issue of umpiring howlers witnessed in recent times. The fourth umpire adjudged the veteran batsman out hit wicket as he was shadow-practising a ramp shot and hit the stumps in the process.

The dismissal occurred in the 25th over when Brendan Taylor was batting fluently and kept Zimbabwe’s faltering innings together. The second ball of the over saw Taylor missing a ramp shot from left-arm seamer Shoriful Islam. But as the 35-year old was shadow practising a shot, he hit the stumps. Taylor, batting on 46, had already received the ball, and was not even trying to run off it.

But below are the laws relating to the hit wicket dismissal:

As per Law 35.1.1.1, batters can be out hit wicket if they put down the wicket with their bat or any part of their person “in the course of any action taken by him/her in preparing to receive or in receiving a delivery.”

In contrast, Law 35.2 states – “the batter is not out hit wicket if the wicket is disturbed “after the striker has completed any action in receiving the delivery,” unless the striker is setting off for a run or lawfully making a second stroke in order to protect their wicket,”

Brendan Taylor shared two promising partnerships with Regis Chakabva and Dion Mayers before perishing; however, the hosts finished at 240. Wessley Medhvere top-scored with 56 and put on the highest partnership of the match, adding 63 with Sikandar Raza.

Shoriful Islam was the pick of Bangladesh bowlers, finishing with figures of 10-0-46-4, while Shakib Al Hasan also took two scalps. Taskin Ahmed, Mohammad Saifuddin, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz snared one each. Bangladesh, who won the one-off Test comfortably, lead the three-match ODI series as well.
