Debutant off-spinning all-rounder Krishnappa Gowtham may have not got off to a good start to his international ODI career but the rub-of-the green finally went with the Karnataka cricketer as he claimed his maiden wicket on just the third ball of his spell during the ongoing third ODI against Sri Lanka.

With the wicket showing signs of gripping and the fast bowling duo of Navdeep Saini and debutant Chetan Sakariya failing to provide a breakthrough in their respective two over bursts, skipper Shikhar Dhawan immediately turned to his spin pair of Rahul Chahar and Krishnappa Gowtham.

And, the move paid off as Minod Bhaunka perished for a 17-ball 7 in the 6th over, bowled by Goutham.

Goutham, who was welcomed to ODI cricket with a crunching shot by Avishka Fernando, did not exactly plan the dismissal, but, nevertheless, he’d take that any day of the week.

It all happened on the third ball of Krishnappa Goutham’s first maiden ODI over when Minod Bhanuka picked out the square-led fielder- Chetan Sakariya- to perfection.

Bhanuka got on one knee and he was looking to slog sweep Gowtham past the deep square-leg boundary but he was guilty of being too early in his stroke. As a result, he ended up hitting it straight to the debutant Sakariya, who made absolutely no mistake in pouching it safely.

Despite losing Minod Bhanuka’s wicket, Sri Lanka has asserted themselves into a pole position to win the final ODI thanks to the belligerent Avishka Fernando, who was taken the Indian attack to the cleaners courtesy of some brilliant strokeplay.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa is giving him able company as the left-hander has already smashed four boundaries during his run-a-ball 19. At the time of writing, Sri Lanka had moved on to 1/71 after 12 overs.
