Virat Kohli’s weakness against the ball on fifth and sixth stumps is well documented. Not surprisingly, the fifth and sixth-stump line was employed by South Africa against the India skipper in the ongoing series. The intention was clear- trap Kohli with the delivery that came to him. The ploy paid off in the first Test at Newlands as Vernon Philander dismissed him with an incoming delivery.

However, the India skipper managed to come out on top in the first innings of the ongoing second Test in Centurion, scoring a brilliant 153 to help his side post 307. But despite the failure in the first innings, the hosts did not change their plans and once again used the same ploy against the 29-year old, and it paid off. The India batting star walked into bat when India were reeling at 16 for 2 while chasing 287. However, Kohli could not replicate his heroics of the first innings this time around with debutant Lungi Ngidi dismissing him with the tried and tested ploy.

In the 15th over of the innings, Ngidi bowled three consecutive deliveries outside the off before bringing one in to trap Kohli. Kohli was also done by the uneven bounce as the umpire raised his finger immediately. Kohli took his chance by reviewing the decision, but it did not make any difference as the on-field umpire was spot on with his decision. Kohli could score only five as India found themselves reeling at 26 for 3. The visitors eventually finished the day on 35 for 3.
