He had the results to show and also shares a good rapport with the players. It is a well-known fact that Shastri was also the favourite of Kohli, who, before flying to West Indies for the ongoings series, had backed Shastri to continue the job.

Questions, whether Kohli had his say during the interview procedure, were obvious and Kail Dev, head of CAC, was also asked about the same.

The former India captain denied taking any inputs from Kohli and said if they were to take inputs, they would have taken it from each member of the Indian team.

“Shastri’s term will be till 2021. We didn’t take any inputs from skipper Virat Kohli, if we did that then we would have to take the inputs from the entire Indian team,” he said.

It clarifies rumours of Kohli having any say in the coach-appointment process and Shastri was reappointed purely on the basis of his credentials.

Tom Moody, Mike Hesson, Robin Singh and Lalchand Rajput were other candidates who were in the fray for the job. As per BCCI’s release, Hesson and Moody succeeded on the preference list of CAC, respectively.

It was the fourth time that Moody had applied for the job and again, he could not be the winner. It is unlikely that the former Australian player will not apply for the job. As far as Hesson is concerned, it was a great effort from the Kiwi to end second on the list and he will surely be interested to take up the job after two years.

Phil Simmons, the former West Indies coach and player, was also shortlisted by BCCI for the job but he withdrew his name from the list on the day of the interview.

BCCI will soon conduct interviews for the other coaching positions. MSK Prasad-led selection panel will take a call on those positions.
