When Harbhajan Singh's Hug Made MS Dhoni Teary-Eyed

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and  showing emotion on the field just do not go hand in hand. The most decorated skipper in the history of Indian cricket, who led a cricket crazy nation for almost a decade with utmost aplomb, has been rarely seen showing his anger or emotions on the field. Fondly known as Captain Cool for his calm and composed nature, Dhoni is known for having an extremely cool head on his shoulder.

However, even Dhoni could not control tears coming out of his eyes when the Men in Blue ended India’s 28-year old long wait for the holy grail of the game, the World Cup.  Dhoni had starred with the bat during the game as India thrashed Sri Lanka by six wickets on the famous night at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Chasing a challenging 274, India had their back against the wall when Lasith Malinga sent back both of its in-form openers Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar cheaply. However, Gautam Gambhir revived India’s hopes with a brilliant innings of 97 before Dhoni took the team home with a monumental 91-run knock, ending the proceedings with a huge six.

The shot was followed by his teammates mobbing him with most of them being reduced to tears. On the other hand, Dhoni looked his usual self, not showing much emotions and treating the occasion just like any other day.

However, the newly-released book ‘Democracy XI’, authored by Rajdeep Sardesai has revealed that even Dhoni was in tears which the cameras failed to capture. In fact, the former India skipper himself admitted it. As per the book, Dhoni revealed that he began crying when Harbhajan Singh hugged him.

“Yes, I cried, but the cameras didn’t catch it. I was naturally excited but held back the emotions till a tearful Harbhajan hugged me. That’s when I got teary-eyed but kept my head down so no one would see me crying,” Dhoni said as quoted in the book.
