The horrific Phil Hughes incident would have flashed in front of Sean Abbott’s eyes when his bouncer hit 20-year old Will Pucovski and made the later leave the field. The incident occurred during the Sheffield Shield game between Victoria and New South Wales.

Pucovski was forced from the field at Junction Oval after being struck by the bouncer. He ducked into a shortish-pitched delivery that appeared to hit him on the left side of the helmet. The incident happened in the 19th over of Victoria’s second innings. Pucovski soon collapsed on the ground before the bowler, and the players moved towards him to offer help.

The talented 20-year-old broke through for his maiden Sheffield Shield century last month against the ladder-leading Queensland Bulls, posting a marathon 188 before finally being dismissed. Soon, he was able to rise and walk from the field with the support of the medical staff.

“Will Pucovski remained at the ground following the incident and is being treated by Cricket Victoria’s medical staff.

“Will has been ruled out of the remainder of the match and we will continue to monitor him over the coming days, and we can then determine a return to play plan for him,” said Cricket Victoria Doctor Trefor James.

The injured player was replaced in the Victoria XI by allrounder Dan Christian.

Abbott, whose bouncer had led to Phil Hughes’ death in 2014, looked distressed as his teammates comforted him to recover. Victoria captain Aaron Finch also walked up to Abbott to have a word.
