Ireland captain William Porterfield has released himself from the T20I captaincy duties. Gary Wilson will take the reins of captaincy for the Men in Green in the shortest format of the game.
Wilson first assignment as the captain of the side will be against The Netherlands. Ireland will play a tri-series against Netherlands and Scotland. The first match will be played on June 12 in Rotterdam.
Gary Wilson will hold the bridle of T20I captaincy.
Men in Green will then take on Scotland on June 16. Thus, Wilson will have his work cut out after taking over the captaincy bridle.
However, William Porterfield will continue to lead Ireland in the longest format and 50-overs form. Porterfield had led his team in their inaugural Test match against Pakistan. Ireland had also given a tough competition to Pakistan in their maiden appearance.
Meanwhile, the veteran Irish player William Porterfield has taken the decision as he wants to concentrate more on the traditional two forms of the game.
Ireland will also square off in a T20I series with India in their home conditions on June 27 and June 29 at Dublin. Therefore, Ireland has six T20I matches to play in the month of June.
The 33-year old William Porterfield has played 56 T20I for the Irish team. The southpaw batsman has scored 1002 runs in the 54 innings for his team.
However, Gary Wilson will now take the extra responsibility of leading Ireland. Wilson has played 53 T20I matches in which the wicketkeeper-batsman has scored 891 runs in the 46 innings. Meanwhile, Ireland will be without the services of Ed Joyce who recently retired from the International arena.
