India’s talented batsman Shreyas Iyer believes it is difficult to get going if you are continuously in and out of the team. Iyer was given his chance on Sri Lanka tour and he had done a decent job for the Indian team. However, the right-handed batsman didn’t get regular chances in the national team. Thus, he was not able to build momentum.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer kept performing for India A side and he has once again received his chance in the senior team. The right-hander scored 187 runs in the four innings at an average of 62.33 against West Indies A. The talisman batsman also scored a fine knock of 77 runs on a difficult pitch in the first unofficial One Dayer.

Iyer finally gets his well-deserved opportunity.

“If you are really talented, then you need a certain amount of chances to prove yourself and get acclimatised to the conditions,” Iyer told PTI in an exclusive interview.

“And if you keep coming in and going out (of the team), it doesn’t really set a good pattern for one’s self and you start disbelieving yourself. If you are a great talent, then you need some time,” feels the talented Mumbaikar.

Iyer believes that a player tends to lose patience if he doesn’t get his deserved opportunities in the senior team. However, the selection is not in a player’s hand, he can only perform better to get his chances.

You tend to lose patience.

“Yes, you tend to lose patience but the selection is not in your hands. All you can do is perform, perform and perform and that’s what I enjoy doing,” he said when

asked about times when someone is repeatedly ignored.

“You have to keep performing and keep showing people that you are capable of playing at the higher league. Once you get that sniff, you never look back,” Iyer said.

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer also did a fine job for Delhi Capitals. He led the franchise with aplomb as he was able to take them to playoff stages after six years in IPL 2019. The right-hander scored 463 runs in the 16 matches of the IPL 2019 for Delhi Capitals. Thus, it was expected that Iyer will get his chance in the World Cup but he could not break into the squad.

Iyer was disappointed after World Cup snub.

“Yes, there was a lot of buzz about me before the World Cup selection because I was consistent and aware of the hard work and smart work that I had put in. It will definitely reap benefits and help me in future when I play for India,” he said.

Iyer had done a decent job in the domestic circuit and he could have been given his chance in the middle order. The Mumbai batsman stated that it was difficult not to be picked for the World Cup.

My dream to play in the World Cup.

“It was difficult to not get selected. It was my dream to play the World Cup for my country. I know there are a few opportunities that I got but unfortunately, the team combination was such that it didn’t demand me to be there,” said Iyer.

“I just kept myself positive and always in high spirits. It didn’t disturb me from inside at all. It was a dream to play the World Cup and I will play for sure in the future,” he added.

Shreyas Iyer will get his chance to prove his mettle on the upcoming tour of the West Indies. India will play three T20Is, as many ODIs and two Test matches on the Carribean tour.
