A life-size statue of former India batsman Yuvraj Singh has been unveiled outside of Ferozepur District Cricket Association’s Ground. The statue was unveiled by a local politician on the occasion of New Year’s Day.

In recent times, the likes of Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni saw pavilion stands being named after them but a statue is something new for a cricketer.

In 2013, a statue of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar was also unveiled in Bihar and since then, Yuvraj Singh became the first cricketer to have a statue of himself. Yuvraj Singh is one of the finest cricketers to have represented India in ODIs and T20Is.

While stats and numbers are definitely pleasing to the eyes, it would not be wrong to say that they do not do justice to Yuvraj’s career. Yuvraj was never about big numbers and stats. The southpaw will always be remembered for delivering on the big occasion whenever India needed him.

Whether it was his 84-run knock against the formidable Aussies in just his second ODI or his heroics in the NatWest series World T20 and the 2011 World Cup, Yuvraj rarely disappointed on big occasions.

In the 2007 World T20, he hit Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over during India’s Super 8 match against England. Yuvraj didn’t stop there as he demolished an Australian attack in the semi-final by scoring 70 off just 30 balls. India had gone on to beat Pakistan to lift the trophy.

Four years later, he played a huge role in ending India’s 28-year-long wait for the biggest prize in world cricket – the Cricket World Cup. He scored 362 runs, including a century against the West Indies in Chennai, and picked up 15 wickets to bag the Man of the Tournament award.

After the tournament, he also defeated cancer and made a fairytale return to cricket ground. Yuvraj ended his career with an outstanding ODI record of 8701 runs — 22nd in the overall list, and seventh among Indians — at an average of 36.55 and 111 wickets.
