The All India Senior Selection Committee on Monday (July 23) has named promising leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the 16-member India A squad for the two four-day games against South Africa A. The Indian team will be led by Shreyas Iyer.

Moreover, the likes of Karun Nair and Rishabh Pant missed the make it to the squad. It is because the duo is a part of the Team India squad for the five-match Test series against England starting from August 1 in Birmingham.

Barring these two omissions the team looks similar to the one which toured England. But 13 players managed to hold on to their respective spots.

All the players will be hoping to make their national debuts sooner than later. Skipper Iyer, Chahal and Axar Patel were the new entrants.

The trio have been the part of India’s limited-overs squad for the England series. Hence, they were not included back in the national fold.

Axar will play in the first game only and will be replaced by Shahbaz Nadeem in the next match. Meanwhile, Vijay Shankar has not been included in the squad for his below-par showings in the recent past.

The right-handed batsman Iyer will also be leading the India A side in a quadrangular series involving Australia A and South Africa A.

To everyone’s surprise, the fourth team will be India B which will be led by Manish Pandey. The squad will have the likes of Under-19 stars Shivam Mavi and Shubhman Gill.

Meanwhile, Mayank Markande, who impressed during his Indian Premier League (IPL) stint with the Mumbai Indians (MI), has also been named.
