Chennai Super Kings have got a big history of getting the best of their players and they tend to leave the franchise as a match-winner coming into the auction. The management has been doing really well and Chennai Super Kings have stuck with the combination of Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni for a long time.

After a poor season in 2020, Chennai Super Kings have come up with a better comeback performance this season and finished second at the midway mark. But, the mega auction next year might just be too much for them and they should rebuild their core as the age factor is starting to hurt them. Here are 5 former players Chennai Super Kings should target in IPL 2022 Auction.

Ravichandran Ashwin started his IPL career under MS Dhoni in Chennai Super Kings and he played just two games in the 2009 edition. He was retained in the 2010 edition where he was termed to be a mystery spinner bowling the carrom ball, and he had a great two seasons for CSK being an important member in the trophy-winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011.

He played for the CSK franchise until 2015 and then played for the Rising Pune Supergiants for a couple of years. He was picked up Punjab in the 2018 auction where he captained the franchise and then was traded to his current team R Ashwin. He is very unlikely to be retained by the franchise and hence CSK should target getting him as he is a match-winner with the ball.

Chris Morris:

Not many would have known that the South African all-rounder Chris Morris started his IPL career with the Chennai Super Kings in the 2013 edition. He picked up 15 wickets in 16 IPL games at an economy rate of 8.02?? for the franchise, but it wasn’t enough for him to be retained. He was then picked up by Rajasthan Royals in 2015.

He then played for the Delhi Capitals from 2016 to 2019 until he was released. In the auction, RCB picked him for big price money considering his ability to bowl the death overs as well as his long-hitting ability down the order. However, he was released and Rajasthan bagged him for 16.25 crores in the 2021 auction making him the most expensive player in IPL history. He has delivered with the bat and ball, and CSK should target him.

Jason Holder:

Jason Holder who is currently playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad is most unlikely to be retained by the franchise and he will be up for grabs in the auction. He has become a useful all-rounder who can bowl four overs and finish off games in the middle order.

Holder has been part of the CSK franchise in the 2013 edition where he played 6 games and managed to pick up just 2 wickets. He moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad for the next three years and he did really well in the 2020 IPL for Sunrisers Hyderbad to take his team into the playoffs. He did not get many chances in the IPL this year and is expected to be released.

Vijay Shankar:

Vijay Shankar played for various franchises in his IPL career, but he started with the Chennai Super Kings in the 2014 edition. He played only one game for the franchise where he did not get any chance to bat and bowled just one over which went for 19 runs.

He then moved to the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2016 and 2017 editions where he did really well for the franchise. He was picked up by the Delhi franchise in 2018 and he performed well for them too. He was called up for the Indian side as the all-rounder who can bowl medium pace and he is one of the best strikers of the cricket ball. He is an excellent talent and Chennai Super Kings should get him back.

Tim Southee:

New Zealand fast bowler, Tim Southee played for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2011 edition and he started his IPL career through them. He played 5 matches in the winning campaign for CSK and picked up 4 wickets at an economy rate of 8.73. He was released by the franchise after that.

He then played for various franchises in his IPL career including Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and he wasn’t picked up in the auction for the last two years. He is one of the most underrated T20 bowlers and has a lot of experience in the format. CSK should get him in the auction as they don’t have many fast bowlers.
