Since cricket is a gentlemen’s game, there are only rare moments when we witness cricketers involving in a fight on-field. However, this situation is quite different off the field. Many cricketers and former cricketers are quite active on social media and there are many incidents of them getting involved in a war of words.

Sometimes, some cricketers also criticized by fans for their words during such fights. Sometimes, the players also blocked the other payer after engaging with them in an argument.

These fights are majorly related to their difference in opinions over a matter. In the past, many cricketers engaged in arguments that gave rise to a fight on social media. In February 2018, Ravichandran Ashwin and Herschelle Gibbs were involved in a rude conversation on Twitter. The Indian spinner Ashwin has shared a promotional tweet of Nike shoes. Along with the video of the endorsement, Ashwin wrote, “Hey Guys! Just got my hands on the new NIKE React. It’s got a stunning design and the foam technology used makes it light and comfortable to use. Undoubtedly, the best running shoes I’ve stepped into, can’t wait to flaunt them”.

Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs tried to pull the legs of Ashwin by a notorious tweet. “Hopefully you will be able to run a bit faster now Ashwin,” Gibbs replied on the tweet.

However, this did not go well with Ashwin who taunted Gibbs over his spot-fixing event. “I wasn’t as blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate,” Ashwin replied. Later, Gibbs replied that Ashwin couldn’t even take a joke. The Indian spinner replied that his reply was also a joke and but everyone perceived it differently. Ashwin was criticized by fans for his rule reply to Gibbs.

4. Kevin Pietersen And Mitchell Johnson

Former English cricketer Kevin Pietersen and former Australian cricketer Mitchell Johnson also engaged in the Twitter fight in 2017. During The Ashes 2019 tournament, Kevin Pietersen praised England’s fast bowlers during commentary. However, when England bowlers failed to bowl well later, Mitchell Johnson took a dig at Pietersen on Twitter.

“Hey @KP24 @MichaelVaughan yesterday were carrying on about the pommy fast bowlers being able to bowl in the 140s. Ever since they’ve taken the second new ball they’ve been bowling medium pace. They are allowed to bend their backs, and there’s 4 of them #ashes #sweatbandswinger.,” Johnson wrote.

This did not go well with Pieterson and he replied, “Mitchell, is this you or your management tweeting? If it’s you, you not helping yourself! If it’s your management, ask them to stop or sack them!”

Aakash Chopra and S Sreesanth also engaged in a fight on Twitter in February 2017. Aakash Chopra opined on a fan’s question that he believes when a player gets banned for spot-fixing he never gets a chance to play again. He also mentioned that players selling their countries for their selfishness should not be allowed to play again.

This did not go well with Sreesanth who called Aakash Chopra a double-faced person. “how can u be so 2 faced?? Bro?? Ashamed to even call u that ..really sad to know (what have u replied?? Really..I will play”, Sreesanth wrote.

In reply, Chopra said that it is his opinion and he stands by it. “Not two-faced. That’s my opinion and I stand by it. Never told anyone anything else. I would have the same opinion for my own brother”, Chopra wrote. “I hope ur comments about desh drohi…..etc,also includes the other 13 people who was charged Nd the unopened envelope..”, Sreesanth replied.

Sanjay Manjrekar and Michael Vaughan engaged in banter on Twitter during ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Earlier to the incident former Indian cricketer Manjrekar had called Ravindra Jadeja a ‘bits and pieces cricketer’, for which Jadeja also lashed out on Manjrekar. Later, while predicting the India XI team against New Zealand in ICC Cricket World 2019 semi-final, Manrekar’s predicted team also included Ravindra Jadeja.

Former English cricketer Michael Vaughan took a dig at Manjrekar saying “I see you have picked that bits and pieces cricketer !!!”. To this, Manjrekar replied, ‘Predicted’ my dear Vaughan…not ‘my’ team.” Vaughan later replied, “Bloody hell Bits & Piece can Spin it …. #CWC19”. Manjrekar blocked Michael Vaughan after the argument.

Michael Vaughan and Salman Butt’s fight on Twitter is the latest war of words on social media among cricketers. The former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has opined that if Kane Williamson was Indian, he would have been the world’s best batsman and not Virat Kohli. He mentioned that Virat Kohli is considered the best batsman as he is an Indian and therefore gets a massive fanbase in a cricket-loving country like India.

In reply to this, Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt said that Vaughan’s comments are irrelevant and he likes to stir up debates. He also compared Vaughan to Kohli, saying that how Vaughan has not even hit a single ODI hundred as compared to Kohli who has smashed 70 centuries in his international career.

Replying to this, Vaughan pointed out the Salman’s Butt match-fixing scandal of 2010. “No idea what the headline is … but I seen what Salman has said about me … that’s fine and he is allowed his opinion but I wished he had such a clear thought of mind back in 2010 when he was Match fixing !!!”, Vaghan wrote on Twitter. “You forgot to mention that I haven’t been a match fixer’ corrupting our great game’ either like some…!!!!!!!!,” Vaughan also mentioned in an official Facebook post.
