The Indian Premier League showcased the door to all other cricketing nations on forming their own franchise cricket league tournaments. Players playing the IPL have been teammates in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and vice versa. Inaugurated in 2008, the IPL continues to be the flag bearer behind the idea of coming up with franchise cricket leagues all around the globe, it is the most cash-rich league among all the leagues and into its 14th season. The IPL season will resume in mid-September in the UAE as per BCCI’s recent SGM meeting suggestions. 

Meanwhile, there have been several players who have been teammates in the IPL and the CPL both. Several players have tasted success and AB De Villiers and Kieron Pollard are two big names that have played in both these tournaments. No renowned Indian player has played in the CPL yet as per BCCI’s clause of them not participating in foreign T20 leagues. In this article, we take a look at 5 player duos who have been teammates both in the IPL and CPL.

David Warner and Darren Sammy

The Australian and Windies international have been teammates with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and St. Lucia Zouks in the CPL. Being banned from the IPL in 2018 for the ball-tampering scandal, Warner made his debut in the CPL that year. Previously both these players were teammates at SRH in 2014.

Sammy was released in 2015 as Warner continued to lead the team and led them to their maiden IPL title in 2016. He has also three Orange Caps with the side. 

Andre Russell and Chris Lynn

Russell and Lynn played for KKR for six years before Lynn was released ahead of IPL 2020 auctions. The Australian was picked by Mumbai Indians but he hardly got any games to play. He made his debut for Mumbai Indians earlier this year and played just one match. 

Meanwhile, Russell went onto become one of the key players for KKR over the years. He also became the MVP in 2019 scoring over 500 runs and picking up more than 10 wickets in the season. He also hit 52 sixes, the most by a player in single seaso that year. 

Both these players were teammates in the CPL as well for Jamaica Tallawahs in 2015 before Lynn moved to St. Kitts and Nevis.

Dwayne Bravo and Brendon McCullum

Bravo and McCullum were teammates first with CSK from 2013 to 2015. They played together again for Gujarat Lions when CSK were banned from IPL for two years. They made a comeback in 2018 and won the IPL title that year. 

Meanwhile, Bravo has been a constant with the team since 2011, the former Kiwi skipper played with the team for just three seasons between 2013-2015. Bravo and McCullum were teammates in the CPL for Trinbago Knight Riders in the 2016 edition, Bravo will play for St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in CPL 2021.

Shakib Al Hasan and Jason Holder

Shakib and Holder were teammates at Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2016 edition of the IPL. While the former Windies Test skipper was released the very next year, Shakib left KKR ahead of the 2018 auctions and came back in the 2021 edition. 

Both were teammates at Barbados Tridents in the 2019 edition of the CPL. While Holder has stayed on with the franchise, Shakib will be playing alongside Andre Russell at Jamaica Tallawahs.

AB de Villiers and Ravi Rampaul

The former South African skipper made his CPL debut back in 2016. He played for Barbados Tridents that year alongside Ravi Rampaul, his teammate from RCB from the 2014-15 edition. Rampaul will play for TKR in the upcoming season while De Villiers has decided to skip the season to play in the IPL.

De Villiers and Rampaul complete a list of 5 player duos who have been teammates in the IPL and the CPL over the years.
