The Champions Trophy is one of the two marquee ICC tournaments in the ODI format with the World Cup being the other one.
The first-ever edition of the Champions Trophy was played in the year 1998 with Bangladesh hosting the competition. Nine teams participated in the first edition of the Champions Trophy.
South Africa won the inaugural edition of the ICC Champions Trophy with a win over West Indies in the final. Since the 2009 edition, eight teams participated in the tournament. The last edition of the Champions Trophy was played in 2017.
Later, the ICC decided to scrap the competition and it was not played in 2021. However, the governing body has reinstated the competition and it will now be held in 2025. Pakistan have the hosting rights for the tournament.
India and Australia are the most successful side in the history of the Champions Trophy. They are the only team to win the competition more than once. Both of them have won the competition twice so far.
The other teams to win the tournament are South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Pakistan. In 2002, the Champions Trophy was shared between India and Sri Lanka after the final was washed out due to rain.
