The cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra feels that Australia do not have enough spinners in the squad for ICC World Cup 2023. Aakash Chopra also doubts if Glenn Maxwell is a 10-over bowler for the team.
Glenn Maxwell recently showed a marvelous performance in an ODI against India. In the 3rd ODI, Maxwell picked a 4-wicket haul to crush India’s top order. Although Glenn Maxwell is a good bowler, he is primarily a batsman.
Is Glenn Maxwell A 10-Over Bowler For Australia?: Aakash Chopra
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra highlighted Australia’s strengths and weaknesses in the ICC World Cup 2023. Chopra said that Australia are an interesting team and perform well in big events.
“Australia is an interesting team. No other side has won more World Cups than them. They know how to win, how to play well and turn it on in the big events. This has been the team’s strength, but there are some issues in the squad,” Chopra said.
Aakash Chopra also feels that a team needs spinners on Indian soil and Australia are short of spinners in ICC World Cup 2023. He also doubts if Glenn Maxwell can bowl 10 overs for the team.
“In India, you need spinners to come and bowl, but there are hardly any spinners. They have Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell. The latter picked four wickets recently, dismissing Rohit and Kohli as well. He was very good, but is he your reliable 10-over bowler? When asked about it, George Bailey said Maxwell can’t be taken lightly; he is a good bowler,” Chopra added.
Adam Zampa is the primary spinner for Australia in ICC World Cup 2023. Glenn Maxwell will have to step forward in the bowling being an all-rounder. He was recently backed by Australia chief selector George Bailey to play the role of the frontline spinner for the side in the World Cup 2023 in India.
Australia have quite powerful pacers like Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc but they fall short in the spin department. Australia are led by Pat Cummins. They will face India in their first match of the tournament on October 8.
