Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has praised MS Dhoni’s captaincy record ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023. India are the hosts of the tournament and begin their campaign on October 8 against Australia.

The last time India won the World Cup was in 2011 under MS Dhoni. Gautam Gambhir had played a crucial role in India’s title winning with both batters probably playing their best ODI knocks in the World Cup final. While Gamhir scored 97 Dhoni scored an unbeaten 91 and won the match with a six for India.

“No one can match the captaincy of MS Dhoni in Indian cricket, many captains have come and many captains will come but I do not think anyone can match his captaincy. For a man who won 3 ICC trophies under his captaincy, I don’t think there can be a bigger achievement than this” said Gambhir on Star Sports.

Gambhir further praised MS Dhoni’s batting and said that had he batted at number three, he would have broken a lot more records and that he had to sacrifice his batting due to his captaincy.

“If Dhoni had batted at number 3 in his career, he could have broken many records in ODIs. People always talk about his achievements as a captain, which is absolutely true. But I think because of his captaincy he made a lot of sacrifices in batting. He could have achieved a lot more with the bat, which he did not do. And this happens when you are the captain. Because then you put the team first and forget about yourself” said Gambhir.

Dhoni won all three ICC titles as captain starting with the T20 World Cup in 2007, followed by the ICC World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy title in 2013. He led India in 17 World Cup games between 2011-2015 winning 14 games and losing just two.
