Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has said that the off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is an attacking bowler and a proven match-winner and backed his inclusion in the team for the ICC World Cup 2023.
Ravichandran Ashwin was a late inclusion in the Indian team for the ICC World Cup 2023. The off-spinner replaced injured Axar Patel in the main team and it’ll be his third 50-over World Cup. His experience will be valuable for the team as they look to win the tournament.
Ravichandran Ashwin got an opportunity in the ODI series against Australia. The veteran spinner displayed magnificent performances in the two games as he picked wickets and was economical as well. His staggering outings impressed selectors as he got a nod ahead into the team.
Harbhajan Singh said that Ravichandran Ashwin knows about the value of getting into the World Cup squad and he feels that BCCI made a wise call to add him. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he explained:
“He is a quality spinners. There is no doubt about it. On his day he can win you a game, I believe it’s a very good decision. Ashwin. I think this is a wiser decision, going with Ashwin because he’s got the experience. He’s a match winner proven. Ashwin has been there, he’s done it and of course he was part of the 2011 World Cup winning team. He knows what it takes to get to that level when the competition becomes really really strong.”
Ravichandran Ashwin is more of an attacking bowler – Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh further said that Ravichandran Ashwin is an attacking bowler and he can pick wickets in the middle overs for the team. He added:
“So I believe it’s a very good decision to add him. Ashwin I feel is more of an attacking bowler who could get those wickets in the middle overs for you and that’s where you can win most of the game. If I was captain of the team or part of management, I would pick my five best bowlers and Ashwin would be first or second on that list.”
Ravichandran Ashwin is expected to play a huge role with the ball in the ICC World Cup 2023. India will open their campaign against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 8.
