Pakistan chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq had a witty response to a journalist who asked him about Mohammad Nawaz and Kuldeep Yadav during Pakistan’s squad announcement for ICC World Cup 2023. The tournament is scheduled to be played from India and
Pakistan, on Friday (September 22), confirmed their squad for the marquee event. Babar Azam will lead the side in the tournament as Pakistan look to win their second ODI World Cup and first since 1992. The Men in Green have grabbed the headlines in recent times for all the wrong reasons in the wake of their humiliating exit from Asia Cup 2023.
Pakistan had entered the competition as the favorites but bowed out at the Super 4 stage after suffering crushing defeats at the hands of India and Sri Lanka. The defeats also exposed a number of problems in the Pakistan team. And one of the issues was the poor performance of the spinners.
Inzamam-ul-Haq on Mohammad Nawaz vs Kuldeep Yadav:
Pakistan’s spin spearhead Shadab Khan had a terrible outing in the tournament while left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz also failed to make a mark. Nawaz managed to pick up just one wicket in three games. But the Pakistan selectors have retained their faith in the duo and have named him in the World Cup squad along with Usama Mir.
Nawaz’s selection, however, has not gone down well with many. After the squad was announced, one journalist presented the bowler’s stats as well as India spinner Kuldeep Yadav’s stats and sought an explanation from Inzamam-ul-Haq for the selection. In reply, the former Pakistan skipper came up with a hilarious reply, saying:
“You have come up with some good stats on both bowlers but let me say that I cannot select Kuldeep Yadav…for me that’s an issue as he is from another team.”

Unlike Nawaz and Shadab, Kuldeep had an impressive outing in the Asia Cup. He picked up 5 wickets against Pakistan in the Super 4 match and followed it up with a 4-wicket haul against Sri Lanka.
