Experienced opener Tamim Iqbal reportedly directed offensive language towards Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief Nazmul Hasan. Tamim Iqbal’s actions were apparently a response to certain restrictions imposed on him ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023.
Tamim Iqbal was named in Bangladesh’s 15-member squad for the upcoming World Cup in India. Reports suggested that the opening batter had not fully recovered from his back injury. However, he claimed that he was fit enough to participate in the tournament.
In a video posted on Facebook, Tamim Iqbal disclosed that a senior BCB official asked him not to participate in the team’s World Cup opening game against Afghanistan and to bat in the middle order, a position he had never played in international cricket.
Tamim Iqbal Asked To Bat In Middle Order Against Afghanistan
As per Cricbuzz, Nazmul Hasan’s call offering Tamim a lower batting position against Afghanistan led to Tamim’s misbehavior and foul language. The board members were surprised by Tamim’s reaction, as they considered the decision tactical rather than personal.
“I think he (Tamim) reacted quite surprisingly after the offer was made regarding the opening game (against Afghanistan). He should have realized that he is struggling against Afghanistan and both Fazal Haq and Mujeeb are troubling him,” an anonymous member of the team management told Cricbuzz.
“The concept behind putting him down the order was that team management was considering whether he would find it easy to handle Rashid (Khan) as he shouldn’t be troubling him as much he troubles a right-handed batsman being a leg spinner.”
The left-handed batter struggled to score against Afghanistan in an ODI series at home last year. He scored 31 runs in three innings, with an average of 10.33 and a strike rate of 54.39. He scored 13 runs against Afghanistan this year before announcing his sudden retirement.
During an interview with Cricbuzz, BCB president Nazmul Hasan confirmed that the rift between Tamim and Shakib appears to be insurmountable, despite multiple attempts at reconciliation.
“I have tried to sit with them and sort out their differences but it did not work and I don’t think there is any point trying it now considering their differences are too big for anyone to comprehend,” a BCB director, closely working with the national team, told Cricbuzz.
The Shakib Al Hasan-led team will commence their campaign with a clash against Afghanistan at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on October 7.
