Tilak Varma To Play In ICC World Cup 2023? Rohit Sharma Finally Breaks His Silence

With Tilak Varma making a stunning start to his international cricket, many have urged Team India and the selectors to give the youngster the opportunity to play ODIs as soon as possible.

After his impressive performances in the domestic circuit and in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Tilak Varma earned his maiden call-up for the ongoing T20I series against West Indies. And he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The Southpaw has played in all three T20Is so far and has impressed in all of them.

In the first two T20Is, he top-scored for Team India before playing a crucial unbeaten knock in the do-or-die third T20I. Tilak Varma started his international career with a 39-run knock and followed it up with a 51-run knock in the second T20I. In the third game of the five-match series, he scored an unbeaten 49 and shared a crucial 87-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav to take the team home.

With Tilak Varma further enhancing his reputation, there have been calls from several quarters to include the youngster in the ODI team as well. Former India chief selector has even said that Tilak Varma could be an option for Team India for the World Cup if Shreyas Iyer fails to recover in time.

And now captain Rohit Sharma has opened up on that possibility. The batting star was recently asked whether Tilak Varma could make it to the team for this year’s World Cup. In reply, Rohit Sharma was all praise for the youngster but refused to give a clear-cut answer, saying:

“He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now; he has hunger, and that is the most important thing.

“In him, I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite mature. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him, I understand that the boy knows his batting, where he has to hit, and what he has to do in that period.

“That is all that I will say about him; I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented, and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India,” he added.
