The Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer did not make it to the final 15 member squad for the T20 Worldcup 2021 and certainly, it is very harsh on the batsman who had to miss out on action due to injury. Shreyas Iyer has been India’s designated number four in ODI international for the last two years and he has done well at the position.

He was in excellent form in the home series against England this year and looked like he will be the automatic choice for India’s number four in the T20 World cup unless he suffered a shoulder injury while fielding. He had to miss almost six months of action and had undergone surgery as well. He has recovered now and here are 3 reasons why Shreyas Iyer deserved a place in India’s squad for T20 Worldcup.

3 Reasons Why Shreyas Iyer Deserved A Place In India’s Squad For T20 World Cup:

Shreyas Iyer’s Form Before Injury

Shreyas Iyer looked unstoppable before the injury he picked during the home series against England and his overall record for India in limited-overs format has been superb until now. Iyer has been consistent at number four for India with 550 runs in 29 T20 innings so far at an average of just under 29. He has three fifties already and showed that he can play under pressure.

In the England series, he played some valuable innings when India needed him the most and showed off his finishing skills in death overs as well. He is one of the biggest hitters of the cricket ball and can clear any ground in the world. He definitely deserved a place in the T20 Worldcup squad ahead of inexperienced Ishan Kishan.

Shreyas Iyer’s Record In UAE

Shreyas Iyer’s record in UAE is stunning as he finished fourth in the race for the orange cap in IPL 2020. The Delhi Capitals skipper has been one of the consistent contributors at number three for Delhi and he is one of the most versatile batsmen as well. He can play in the middle order as well as he is one of the best hitters of spin in the country.

Iyer hit 519 runs in 17 games in UAE in the previous IPL edition and got his side to the finals of the tournament as well. The right-hander’s experience in UAE should have been considered and he should have got the nod for the T20 World cup.

Shreyas Iyer’s Versatility With The Bat

Shreyas Iyer has been batting at the number three position for the Delhi Capitals consistently and he has batted at number four for India in ODIs. In T20Is for India, he has dropped one position below to number five and six at times but has remained a decent contributor which adds a lot of value to the team.

Despite his number changing around in different formats, he has shown a lot of maturity in staying to his form and has made sure that he keeps performing with the bat. Iyer is an excellent fielder as well and he adds depth to the Indian middle order if a right-hander is needed instead of Ishan Kishan. India could have reduced one of their five spinners and selected Iyer for sure.
