Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir was furious at the people who began questioning the integrity of Indian pace bowler, Mohammad Shami, following India’s defeat to Pakistan in the T20 World Cup.

After setting a target of 152 for their arch-rivals, India failed to defend as Pakistan cruised to a 10-wicket victory. Shami had an off-day with the ball, conceding 43 runs in 3.5 overs, which led to abuse on social media that was frowned upon by the cricketing fraternity.

India lose to Pakistan on Sunday. By Monday/Tuesday, Mohammad Shami’s integrity towards his team and country was being questioned. How ridiculous can that be? Is it to say that Jasprit Bumrah or Bhuvneshwar Kumar were more committed because they belong to a certain religion? Where are we heading?

I know Shami very well as I have led him in KKR. He is a hard-working, committed fast bowler who just had an off day. Unfortunately for him, it happened against Pakistan. But that can happen to anyone. Why can’t we just say, “well done Pakistan” and leave it at that?” Gambhir questioned in his column for the Times of India.

“Quinton de Kock’s matter demands more clarity” – Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir further stated that South African wicket-keeper batsman, Quinton de Kock, refusing to take the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement was a ‘shame’. However, he expects a clear explanation on the matter sometime soon.

Quinton De Kock refusing to kneel down for the “Black Lives Matter” campaign was a shame. I am not sure what are his reasons to abstain but the matter demands more clarity. Anything left to speculate in a shoot-happy world of social media is going to complicate matters even more. And remember the team is South Africa, a nation which has had its share of racism inflicted episodes,” Gambhir added.

South Africa defeated West Indies quite comfortably, recovering from the defeat to Australia in fine fashion. They will next face Sri Lanka on Saturday in their third Super 12 match.
