Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn has shown sympathy for his former captain Faf du Plessis, who, despite being in terrific form with the bat in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL 2021), was not included in the South African squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021.

The Proteas have been clubbed in Group 1 of the Super 12s along with Australia, England, West Indies, and two qualifying teams will be led by Temba Bavuma and have experienced T20 players like Quinton de Kock, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, and Tabraiz Shamsi.

However, their batting is slightly short on the experience front with Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen and Reeza Hendricks, who all are amazing batters are playing their maiden T20 World Cup tournament.

You Have To Feel For Faf Du Plessis, I Feel For Faf: Dale Steyn

Faf du Plessis had an excellent IPL 2021, scoring 633 runs in 16 matches with the best score of 95*, also scored a Player of the Match, winning 86 in the final against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), helping CSK win their fourth IPL title.

Speaking on Faf being snubbed from the T20 World Cup squad, Steyn said on ESPNCricinfo’s T20 Timeout show: “You have to feel for Faf. I feel for Faf. He is in the country where the T20 World Cup is about to happen and he almost scored 90 in an IPL final and he is going to be on the next plane EK475 back to Cape Town in two days.

“I can’t even talk about it, but it blows my mind. He was fantastic. He will be disappointed that he missed out on the orange cap, but he will go home with a winners’ medal.”

Du Plessis retired from Test cricket in 2020 but had indicated that remained available to play all forms of white-ball cricket for the Proteas. However, CSA director Graeme Smith said they couldn’t come to terms with ‘free agent’ Faf du Plessis while talking about T20 World Cup 2021, so he was not included in the squad.
