The Netherlands have announced their squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 which will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman starting from October 17 and the final of the tournament will be played on November 14. The tournament is being hosted by India.
The Netherlands have not qualified for the Super 12s round directly and instead will have to go through an eight-team qualifying round in order to make it into either of the two groups in the main round. The Dutch have been grouped with Sri Lanka, Ireland, and Namibia in Group A of the first round and will play their opening encounter against Ireland on October 18 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Though the Netherlands team is pretty novice they still have named a squad filled with players who have plenty of experience of playing in other countries in first-class cricket and in T20 leagues all around the world.
Ryan Ten Doeschate and Roelof van der Merwe included in the Netherlands team for the T20 World Cup 2021
A couple of players who have done the Netherlands proud are Ryan Ten Doeschate, who is known for his exploits for the Dutch on the international stage and has even played for an extended period of time for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The other is Roelof van der Merwe, who has also played international cricket for South Africa.
Apart from them captain Pieter Seelaar, Paul van Meerkeren, Ben Cooper, and Stephen Myburgh are some of the names people remember from their record run chase against Ireland in the 2014 T20 World Cup when Myburgh helped the Netherlands chase down 193 runs in 13.5 overs to qualify for the main draw.
“I’m extremely excited to announce the 2021 T20 World Cup squad for the Netherlands. This has probably been my toughest selection process since I’ve taken over the job. I am excited about the blend of experience and youth we’re taking to the UAE.
Colin Ackermann will step up to the vice-captaincy role and it’ll be fantastic to have veteran Ryan ten Doeschate come with us for one last hoorah. I think our strength will always be our fast bowling group and all of them have had a fantastic season, especially our county bowlers. I look forward to seeing them make a real impact during this tournament,” coach Ryan Campbell said.
