Legendary West Indies batsman Brian Lara has said that the ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle should be part of the West Indies playing XI in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, even if he doesn’t score runs because he can still make an impression on youngsters.

Chris Gayle is an absolute legend in the shorter format of the game, having scored over 14,000 runs and 22 centuries at a strike rate of close to 150. However, his recent form hasn’t been very good. He had a poor run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, and in the World Cup, he has only scored 25 runs in 2 games.

Talking about Gayle on Star Sports, former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel opined that it’s time for West Indies to look beyond the ‘Universe Boss’.

Chris Gayle, with all due respect to what he has done in T20 cricket, but here we are talking about international high-quality games. For me, it’s time that West Indies moves on from Gayle and try and get someone at No. 3,” he said.

Chris Gayle’s Experience And The Fact That He Can Pass On Something To The Younger Players Is Key – Brian Lara

Responding to the comments made by Parthiv, Lara said that Gayle brings a plethora of experience with him, and he can pass on that experience to the youngsters.

Chris Gayle is already in the World Cup and his experience and the fact that he can pass on something to the younger players is key,” he added.

Lara further added that dropping Gayle from this stage will be an unfair thing to do, and he deserves the proper send-off.

I personally believe that Chris Gayle has to be given a proper send-off. This, I think, is his last tournament. Dismissing Chris Gayle at this stage of the tournament, I am not sure it’s the right thing. I would like to see some sort of nice approach for the rest of the tournament. I think he can still make an impression on the younger players even if he doesn’t score,” he asserted.

Patel believes that Gayle should be given an opening slot back where he has scored a lot of runs, and West Indies should drop Lendl Simmons, who looked completely out of form in the game against South Africa.

Just make him open instead of Lendl Simmons. Give him the place where he has got all those runs and become the Universe Boss. Might as well give him that opening position,” he concluded.

West Indies will next lock horns with Bangladesh at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday, October 29.
