Former India opener Virender Sehwag believes that if Pakistan can play the way they have been playing, they can defeat Australia in the upcoming semi-final of the T20 World Cup.

Babar Azam’s side is the only team in the tournament to remain unbeaten, and wouldn’t want to lose now. They meet Aaron Finch’s outfit, who, apart from their loss to England, have been clinical with both bat and ball. The semi-final is scheduled for Thursday in Dubai.

Virender Sehwag pointed out that the Men In Green have strong momentum on their side and, and although Australia would be a tougher challenge, he feels they should be able to go past them.

“Pakistan will definitely be taking the momentum (of Super 12s) into the semifinals. They have basically checked all the boxes, be it their opening, their middle order, or their bowling department.

“Australia have always proved to be a difficult opponent but if Pakistan continues to play the way they have then they will win,” Virender Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Hayden can share insights about possible weaknesses within the Australian side: Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag pointed out that Matthew Hayden’s presence in the Pakistan dressing room as the batting consultant will further help the Group 2 toppers. Citing the example of how Gary Kirsten prepared India to face South Africa, he reckoned Hayden may know about any chinks in the Australian team.

“There is a definite help when an overseas coach joins the team and they bring certain insights which can prove invaluable. Matthew Hayden was always an aggressive and positive player and we can see that mentality being instilled in the Pakistani batsmen.

“Hayden was a huge part of Cricket Australia and he can definitely share insights when it comes to possible weaknesses within the Australian side which Pakistan can exploit.

“It is similar to when Gary Kirsten joined the Indian management, he also shared his experience in regards to South Africa when we faced them and it was all proven right on the field,” he concluded.

The other semi-final is between England and New Zealand, to be held on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi.
