West Indies and Bangladesh are slated to play the 23rd match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 on Friday. The two teams currently occupy the bottom two positions of the Group 1 points table. Bangladesh currently sits at the fifth spot and are yet to win a game in the Super 12s. Bangladesh have blown hot and cold in the tournament thus far. They wouldn’t be too satisfied with their performances.
Scotland gave them a reality check in their very first game of round one. However, two wins in the next two games meant that they sealed their berth in the Super 12. While they did reach the super 12s, chances going into the semis look very slim.
Bangladesh have lost both the games played in the super 12s and one more defeat could end their hopes of reaching the semi-finals. It won’t be wrong to say that they haven’t performed as a unit. Besides, they lacked someone who could dish out consistent performances.
In their second last game against Sri Lanka, M Naim set the foundation with a solid knock at the top of the order. Mushfiqur Rahim capitalized on that start and took the team to a competitive score. However, the same didn’t happen against England. Both the openers went back early and Shakib too didn’t make a useful contribution either.
Mushfiqur Rahim (29 off 30) and Mahmudullah (19 off 24) failed to convert the starts into big scores. And a result, they could only manage to score 124 runs on the board. England chased down the score quite comfortably in 14.1 overs. Ahead of the game against West Indies, the batting unit needs to fire in unison or else Bangladesh might well be knocked out of the semis.
West Indies performance hasn’t inspired a lot of confidence either. All the big names in their batting unit failed miserably. The way Lendl Simmons approached his innings in the last game against South Africa was unfathomable. The West Indies opener used up 35 balls for 16 runs. His innings put pressure on other batsmen and perhaps led to West Indies’ downfall.
Ewin Lewis, though, produced a brilliant 35-ball 56 to set the foundation for a big score but all the big names in the middle-order failed to make an impact. West Indies, as a result, could manage only 143 runs in the first innings. South Africa chased down the score quite easily in 18.2 overs. It shouldn’t come as a surprise if Andre Fletcher replaces Lendl Simmons in the next game.
