Australia take on Ireland in match 31 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at the Gabba on October 31. Both the teams had their previous match rained out. Australia shared the points with England while Ireland shared points with Afghanistan. This match is an opportunity for the Aussies to boost their NRR.

A total of 45 matches will take place during ICC T20 World Cup 2022. A total of 16 teams are part of the tournament. The final will be played on November 13. Australia are the hosts of the tournament for 2022. They are also the defending champions of the tournament having won the title back in 2021.

The T20 World Cup has already seen some upsets with Ireland beating England and Zimbabwe beating Pakistan in the Super 12 stage. The Aussies need crucial two points and skipper Aaron Finch is very aware of the threat that the Irish players carry with them.

Australia had a thumping win over Sri Lanka before their game against England was rained out. Currently, they are placed fourth in the points table with three points to their name and an NRR of (-1.555). The group is very tight at the moment with the fight to get to the top two really on. A win against Ireland can see get the Aussies within the top two. They need to win by a big margin to get their NRR into positive. Finch spoke about the threat that teams like Ireland and Afghanistan carry after their abandoned game against England.

“You got to try and win firstly. Then you try and push for the NRR. You can never underestimate Ireland and Afghanistan. They’ve got some world-class players. You can overplay the situation at times and that takes you focus off your job at hand. We’ll control what we can” said Finch.

Matthew Wade has tested positive for covid but was in line to play the game against England. In case he misses the game against Ireland, Australia does not have a backup keeper to replace him. Glenn Maxwell might keep wickets against Ireland as he was seen practicing his keeping skills ahead of the England game. The rest of the squad looks settled and fit as well.

Ireland registered a memorable victory against England in their Super 12 clash. They have now beaten West Indies and England among the big teams of the tournament. Having posted 157 batting first, the Irish won by five runs in the DLS method before rain played spoilsport. They have to play with the same intensity and urgency if they want to beat the World Champions.

They now have a real job against the Aussies and will have to play out of their skin to get one past them and create the biggest upset of the tournament. Skipper Andrew Balbirnie has led the team beautifully and has kept the faith in his players.
