New Zealand suffered a huge blow as all-rounder Daryl Mitchell will not play in their ICC T20 World Cup 2022 tournament opener against Australia on October 22 in Sydney, confirmed captain Kane Williamson on Friday.
Mitchell, who won the Player of the Match award in the semi-final of last year’s mega event against England, is currently recovering from a fracture in his finger. He missed New Zealand’s last T20I engagement at home against Pakistan and Bangladesh due to his finger injury. But he did play in the warm-up game against South Africa on October 17 but didn’t get a chance to bat and bowl.
Ahead of the match against the Aussies to be played on Saturday, October 22 at Sydney Cricket Ground, Kane Williamson confirmed Mitchell’s unavailability. He also added that other players of the squad are all fit and raring to go.

“Daryl is still unavailable, I am tracking it, and everybody else is fit enough,” Williamson was quoted as saying in the pre-match press conference.
For Us, It’s About Sticking To Basics: Kane Williamson
New Zealand’s ill luck in limited overs ICC finals continued as after losing the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s to England, they fell short of the goal once again against Australia in the final of the T20 World Cup 2021 in Dubai last year.
The Black Caps have won only one ICC trophy in limited overs, the knockout Champions Trophy which came in 2000 in Nairobi, Kenya when they defeated India in the finals of the tournament. Since then, they have reached the finals of the 2015 World Cup, the 2019 World Cup, and the 2021 T20 World Cup, losing all three.

At the presser, Williamson also talked about gaining momentum early in the tournament by securing victories and talked about the loss in the final to Australia in the last edition.
“It was a great game and unfortunate for us not to be on the right side, but Australia were outstanding in that game. Tomorrow, it’s the first game of the tournament and every team wants to start and get a bit of momentum early, important in short events. So, nice to play against Australia first up,” he stated.
“No, we haven’t thought too much about that. A lot of those clashes have been against Australia, a strong side. You play a variety of opposition and for us, it’s about sticking to basics,” Williamson added.
