On Friday, October 14, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the veteran India National Cricket Team right-arm pacer Mohammed Shami will replace injured Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 15-member squad.

Premier Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup due to a back injury. Bumrah picked up a back injury ahead of the Asia Cup 2022 that ruled him out of the multi-nation tournament. The pacer made his comeback to competitive cricket in the T20I series against Australia.

The premier pacer was expected to feature in the subsequent T20I series against South Africa, but he missed the first game after complaining of back pain and later he got ruled out of the South Africa series as well as the World Cup.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 is scheduled to commence on October 16 with the group stage matches. The Super 12 round will commence on October 22 and the final is set to take place on November 13 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

On Friday, October 14, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement in which it was asserted that the veteran pacer Shami has already reached Australia and will link up with the squad in Brisbane ahead of the warm-up games.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. Shami has reached Australia and will link up with the squad in Brisbane ahead of the warm-up matches,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said.

Notably, Shami, who performed brilliantly for the champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, has not played a T20I for India since the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE. He was named in the squad for the home T20I series against Australia and South Africa, but he contracted Covid-19 and got ruled out of both series.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also named Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur as backup players in the squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

“Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have been named as backups and will travel to Australia shortly,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated.
